The Impact of African-American Immigration and High Incarceration Rate
Problem statement
The immigration of African-Americans into the United States has been a contentious issue for many years. Research shows that more than 15% of African Americans immigrate either end up in prison, live in poor conditions, or are deported to their countries (Hinton & Cook, 2021). In worst cases, African Americans are rattled in the hands of the police before landing in the prisons. Although African Americans are among the largest minority group in the country, what puzzles most of the researchers is that they are the majority of the inmates in the correctional facilities (Landgrave & Nowrasteh, 2018). According to Muller (2012), since the origin of modern American Imprisonment and policing, blacks, whether self-emancipated, enslaved, or free, are a constant target of the unique form of policing and confinements.
Based on their skin color and birth circumstances, the blacks were forced to migrate into the new world, where they toiled in the bondage of slavery and survived the oppressions of 1865 (Hinton & Cook, 2021). In the following century, African Americans, despite several liberations such as black movement, they are still the majority in American correctional facilities. Looking into the history shows that the criminal justice campaigns disproportionally victimized the black youths, men, women, and families at large (Latzer, 2018). This continued through the 20th century and is currently the main contributor to the high number of blacks in prison. Despite the discrimination in the criminal justice system, blacks hold inferior social-economic status and live in neighborhoods characterized by high risks such as engaging in crimes, drug trafficking, murder, and violence that are likely to land them in prison (Gardner, 2016). Moreover, unfair trial and sentencing and taking into account that most African American victims cannot afford attorney representation increases the risk of imprisonment. Therefore, the question raised is whether African Americans are perceived as a threat or the aspect of racial discrimination in society, policing, and the criminal justice system that has continued to discriminate against them for many years.
